Precursors to the FBI
Bureau of InvestigationFounded in 1908 as an early version of an FBI operating under a different name (the FBI considers the founding of the BOI as its official founding date). The BOI was created by president Theodore Roosevelt to investigate national banking, bankruptcy, naturalization, antitrust, peonage, corruption, and land fraud.

Director J. Edgar HooverServed as the Director of the BOI from 1924 - 1972. Hoover was primarily responsible for the establishment of the FBI Laboratory, opened in 1932, along with the modernization of technology, including a centralized fingerprint file. He is also known for forming the FBI into a large and efficient agency for crime-fighting.
